Good Ethics and Trust – Necessities for Building a Large Successful Business

by sphares on October 11, 2009

Develop and Maintain Good Ethics in businessAs a business owner, you want to grow your business into a large company that people repeatedly come to when they need whatever it is you offer. Whether you are in a network marketing business, sell bicycle tires or mutual funds, you want to become the go-to source when people think of your product or service. To become large and successful in business, you must work hard to maintain good ethics and develop a strong sense of trust with your customer and/or distributor base.

Not only will good business ethics make your customers and business partners happy, but it will also translate into more sales. The Institute of Business Ethics reported that companies that put time and effort into ethical conduct always outperformed those that did not. If you want to raise your bottom line, focus on ethical, trust-building policies, such as these:

Honesty and Trustworthiness

Be truthful and honest with in your relationships with everyone, delivering what you promise each and every time. When you gain people’s trust, they will return to you time and time again for their needs. You cannot fake trustworthiness. Your business must genuinely show trustworthiness, being there to meet people’s needs each and every time exactly as you promise.

This translates into situations where something goes wrong as well. If you make a mistake, go out of your way to regain trust by fixing it. Go above and beyond to make the customer happy, honor your obligations (even if it is costly), and give something extra to compensate for any frustration. This will show you can be trusted to do the right thing even when you make a mistake.

Community Involvement

Being involved in your local community, both online and where you actually live, will build trust and show your good ethical stance. Community involvement also gives you the chance to get your name “out there.” People want to work with those that are active in the community and contribute to the overall well being of the local population, so stay active.

Keep Your Finances in Line

How many Fortune 500 companies have recently been in the limelight because of fraud or misuse of money? Probably too many to count, and the general public has taken notice of this. Show your ethics by keeping close tabs on your accounting. Even if accounting is not your strong point, maintain a “hands on” approach to the money aspects of your business. If you notice questionable activities, put a stop to them.

While your customers and distributors will not have the ability to look inside your accounting department, the closer you watch your finances, the more successful you will be. You will also be avoiding the chance of becoming one of those statistics in the future when your business is flourishing.

Remember, maintaining ethical practices now, even while your business is still growing, will ensure that they become a natural part of your business model, continuing to influence your business as it grows and develops. As you develop new plans and strategies for your business, always look at them from an ethical viewpoint, and soon you will recognize the success you are dreaming about.

Great points Scott! In every venture that we take on, whether it be personal or business related, relationships based on trust are mandatory. When we put our best foot forward, personal and financial success will follow.

Love the subject of the post, Scott. Developing and maintaining trust is indeed so critical in what /how conversations and relationships open up to us in this business, or indeed in any other business or endeavour. The correlation between us being trustworthy in our relationships and our long term success cannot be over-emphasised. Excellent post!

Yet again, Scott, another great post about building trust and having good business ethics. You are so right, this is crucial.

There is a local hardware store in the town I grew up in. It has survived the home depots and lowes, and I know it’s because they have provided amazing customer service. As a kid I remember my parents saying, “Durfee’s hardware will know and have what we need”. They are part of the community and are so trusted.

Building trust online is a bit trickier, but once you get it down and show the world you are likable and trust-worthy, people will google you b/c you’ll have the answers they are looking for.

Hey Scott,

I couldn’t agree with you more.

It is so disappointing when someone we put our faith and trust in let’s us down. I know we are all human but, some people are too full of their own ego.

In my 30+ years in business I have experienced those individuals who lack integrity. It is interesting that these people always seem to leave a trail behind them.

I have learned to love them and let them grow. ..they simply need more personal development. Unfortunately, most people think they all ready know it all and don’t need to look at their beliefs.

Interesting…

Thanks Scott for being a great example and walking your talk my friend.

You have a choice so, make it a better than terrific day!

Right on Scott! To be honest, I think people can smell a rat from a mile away. There really is no option in business now days other than to be honest and ethical.

Maintaining you finances is a big one. With most of America in huge debt, this has never been more important.

I like this quote.

Interest works night and day in fair weather and in foul. It gnaws at a man’s substance with invisible teeth.
-Henry Ward Beecher

Great post Scott!

Nicely done Scott…
I don’t think there is any question in this day and age especially that people are looking for integrity and character in anybody that they are going to do any life-transactions with…whether it be business or other.

There is so much corruption in the political and corporate realm that people are a bit gunshy but are so wanting to find people who are truly trustworthy.
