What are the top five goals you have for your life? Your answer to that question is going to be vastly different than your neighbor’s. Maybe your goals are financial in nature, or maybe they revolve around something you want for your family. Regardless, there is one area you must focus on in order to achieve those goals, and that is personal development
What Is Personal Development?
Personal development refers to mapping out your life’s strategy and growing the areas within yourself that are necessary to help you reach your goals. For instance, if your goal is to make a certain amount of money, then you must develop a good work ethic and smart business sense as part of your personal development plan. No matter what your goals are, they start with looking inside of yourself and developing inward character qualities, and then using those inward character qualities to grow outward talents and skills to help you reach those goals.
Establishes Your Identity
If you do not know who you really are, then you will never be able to reach your goals. You will be walking life’s path with a stranger, if you will. Start your personal development by doing some self-discovery. Learn who you are, where your strengths lie, what makes you tick and what truly motivates you to succeed. Then, use what you have learned to help you as you strive towards the goals you have set.
Brings Clarity
By taking some time to focus on personal development, you can look at your goals with more clarity. You can establish which goals are for the long term and which are for the short term, allowing you to better focus your energy as you strive to reach them.
Personal development also helps you look at future decisions with clarity. You will know which decision better fits your skill set and will help you reach your goals, instead of simply making a blind choice. Personal development outlines your career and life goals, allowing you to form all decisions based on those.
Keeps You on Track
If you do not work on personal development before starting to pursue your goals, you will get sidetracked by “better offers” that come your way. For instance, if you are offered a better paying position within your company, yet it is one that steers you off the track you have chosen for your life, a lack of personal development and strategies you will build as you develop yourself from within will make that distraction much more tempting. The same can be said for investment opportunities. Without a clear plan in place, you will be tempted to invest in every “good” opportunity that passes your desk, whether or not it is in line with your ultimate plan.
Personal development keeps you on track and ensures that every step you take brings you closer to your ultimate goals for your life or business. Without it, you have no hope of reaching your goals, because you will not know yourself, will be easily side tracked and will have a difficult time making decisions.

Personal development is spending time improving your most important asset!
Scott, Dude, that is the case with me. I find that I sometimes let down the personal development on a daily basis and when I do, I have a set-back with business. Thanks for the reminder.

Great post Scott, I think this is KEY in achieving any kind of success. You have to work on yourself harder than you ever work on your business. Thanks for your great advice.
Hi Scott,
“Know Thyself” is the ultimate aim of life. This is the Ancient Greek aphorism inscribed at the forefront of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. This ancient wisdom is timeless and has a place in our modern world.
Like you said, without the exploration of self, one will never fully realize their goals. Personal development is the foundation from which we gain insight and awareness so that we may learn, grow and become more fully realized human beings! Cheers!
